Crisis Management: Where do I Start?

I recently took on the role of Chair for the Canadian Chapter of the Institute for Strategic Risk Management (ISRM). The first order of business was finding a great Vice-Chair. I was fortunate enough to have Andrea Chedas, the Head of Corporate Security at WealthSimple take on this important role. For our inaugural Chapter event, we partnered with the Threat Intelligence Exchange Roundtable (TIER), a Toronto-based, cross sector group of corporate security/intelligence professionals to host a webinar on crisis management fundamentals.

The webinar was well attended and we experienced some fantastic interactive learning with the group. Many thanks again to our TIER partners and our moderator, Matt Porcelli, ISRM New York Chapter Chair. The session was recorded and you are welcome to view same at your leisure on the ISRM website.

ISRM has been established in order to create a global centre where practitioners, academics and policy makers can come together to share information, help progress and promote the underlying understanding and capabilities associated with strategic risk and crisis management, and develop their own personal and professional networks.

If you are interested in joining ISRM and/or joining the Canadian Chapter, please feel free to reach out to me directly.

Thanks again to all who supported the webinar!

Supporting the communities we serve!

One of the greatest benefits of being part of ASIS is the amazing learning opportunities. As Chair of the ASIS Crisis Management and Business Continuity (CMBC) Community Steering Committee, I am fortunate enough to work with our Content Committee creating educational material. For the March podcast they knocked it out of the park again! I learned so much about AI and its potential impacts from everyone that participated.

The podcast delved into the potential risks and threats posed by the use of ChatGPT in various applications, and also discussed the ability of ChatGPT to generate human-like responses in order to be exploited by bad actors to deceive and manipulate individuals.

Andrew J Peden interviewed two experts in the field of AI, cybersecurity, and intelligence gathering, Tony J Ridley and Peter G. Warmka, to understand the current state of security measures and protocols in place to mitigate these risks.

What intelligence are you relying on to support your security operations?

Security planning in operations must be an intelligence lead activity. Finding high quality reporting that you can trust is not always easy. Some organisations try and build their own intelligence production capability but this too can be quite difficult and costly.

Here at RCAS, our professional backgrounds in government spoiled us with very high quality intelligence collection and production. We toyed with the idea of building our own capability but quickly realized this was not going to be cost prohibitive. We decided to subscribe to a variety of paid services for day to day awareness yet this didn’t give us any bespoke capabilities.

Today, when we need specialized intelligence to support our operations, we rely on NSSG’s organic intelligence capability.  Their team is stacked with exceptional intelligence professionals with amazing access to ground truth in a variety of regions.  I invite you to sample their Jan 2023 Global Risk Outlook as well as xxxxxxxxx.
